Building a Home

Last week I found some debris in my mailbox.  At first I wondered if it had blown in the box by accident although I didn't remember it being windy enough to do that, not to mention it was very neatly stuffed in there, so I figured some neighborhood kids put it there.  I took it out and moved on, only to find more a few days later.  Again I removed it.

Yesterday, I found significantly more and realized a bird was trying to build it's nest in my mailbox.  I first heard then spied her as she fluttered around, waiting for me to leave.  I went back in and watched in wonder as she flitted from tree to ground to mailbox, all the while bringing more of whatever she deemed suitable to build her home.

I posted a note for the mailman so as not to disturb all her hard work.  She was still hard at work today and she even had help, I assume from her partner.  As of this evening the nest has grown bigger (I don't know how much more needs to be done as it looks pretty cozy to me) but there's no sign of anyone ready to lay any eggs.

I am patiently awaiting her to return, in hopes of being able to follow her journey through egg laying, hatching and sending her babies out into the world.  No matter how long I have to be without a mail box.
